The Jamaican government’s Constitutional Reform Committee held its second public town hall meeting yesterday at St. Mark’s Anglican Church Hall in Mandeville, Manchester. As with the first meeting, committee members outlined the importance of the country becoming a republic and the process by which it must be done under the current laws of the government which is still under “fully responsible” status as opposed to “fully independent” status. Citizens were allowed to ask questions, share comments and offer suggestions.

Elders Came Prepared with Solutions
Among the few Citizens who spoke during the meeting was elder Haile Mika’El Cujo, who presented to Member of Parliament (MP) Marlene Malahoo Forte his proposal for the Constitution of the Republic of Jamaica. The proposal, which is based mainly on “The 1955 Revised Constitution of Ethiopia”, with excerpts from “The 1738 British/Maroon Treaty”, includes recommendations from Jamaicans – both on the island and the diaspora. It aims to “create a new and glorious history for ourselves and our future generations that shall increase our self-esteem, dignity and integrity.”

Much like when Accompong Maroons ratified their constitution last year, this proposed solution is another inspiration to Moors on the mainland and around the world who seek to establish a Moorish government and join the ranks of States like Allodium Moorish Praedium Ante Colorado (AMPAC), Allodium Moorish Praedium Ante Georgia (AMPAG), and Meru State Republic among others.
Nevertheless, the town hall meeting also revealed some interesting facts concerning the present status of Jamaica and her people in relation to the British Crown (currently King Charles III). It also confirmed my suspicion about the reason why colonial governments are rushing to remove him as their Head of State.
Despite this, it’s my hope that the people of Jamaica and the diaspora will be united in this effort to become a Republic and make lasting changes for the betterment of the people and the inclusion of the Maroons. A revolutionary mindset is absolutely needed in this endeavor to make this dream a reality and prevent corrupt individuals from turning it into a nightmare.
Considering that Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, recently increased the salaries for the Political Directorate (some tripled) while ordinary teachers still receive measly wages, it’s questionable at best, that the current administration would work for the best interest of the people in a new Republic.
Still, the work continues.
